Interviewing and Interrogation is often the most important and at the same time the most difficult phase of an investigation. Investigative Interviewing skills are required in many different settings - formal investigations by law enforcement agencies, internal investigations, employees in organisations tasked with carrying out due diligence checks for money laundering, auditor investigations, a lawyer questioning a witness or a client, etc. It is through the successful application of psychological interviewing or interrogation techniques that the truth is established, valuable intelligence gathered and false confessions avoided. Too often, the only method which a law enforcement officer knows is the use of torture, resulting in false confessions, inaccurate intelligence and making the subject bitter. The Psychodynamics of Interviewing and Interrogation is an intellectual approach designed to obtain legally acceptable confessions.
This 2-day training is a hands-on practical course using real-life cases and real demonstration videos, not re-enactments. Topics covered in this course include case analysis and preparation for various types of cases, including cybercrimes, understanding the psychological make-up of a subject, behavioural symptom analysis for detecting deception, identifying the subject's archilles' heel, and the art of persuasion in getting a legally acceptable confession. All practical exercises on behavioural analysis and techniques of obtaining confessions are based on real cases. Answers to the exercises in the form of actual videos are shown to the class. Detailed course programme is available on request.
This 2-Day course is designed for law enforcement investigators and participants from the private sector involved in investigative interviewing. Conducted by Supt (Ret.) Koa Fung Chew, the 2-day course is based on his more than 45 years of practical experience of using the psychodynamics of interviewing and interrogation. During his career in the Ministry of Home Affairs, he had served as the Head of the Interrogation Unit dealing with a wide range of cases, including serious criminal cases like bank robbery and corruption, terrorism, racial and religious extremism, employees reliability screening, etc. After he retired and founded his company, he handled cases from government agencies, government-linked companies, local and overseas private corporation, legal firms etc. With the exponential growth of serious cybercrimes in the past 10 years, many of these cases involve IT-related in-depth interviewing requiring advanced IT knowledge.
Since 1974, he has taught this art of interviewing and interrogation to more than a thousand local and foreign law enforcement officers, and other participants involved in investigative interviewing in the course of their work.
